Aksu-Djabagly State Nature Reserve

Canyon of the Aksu river
Established on 14 july 1926, the Aksu-Djabagly state nature reserve is the oldest nature reserve of Central Asia. Located in the north western part of the Tien Shan range it is one of the richest populated nature reserves in the world. For example you will find 239 different bird species in this 85,574 ha area. Even if you go to Africa most parks will not even come close to this number. Besides birds there live 52 species of mammals, 11 species of reptiles and 5000 different insects. Not only wildlife is very diverse. The botanist can find not less than 1279 different plants. For those interested, in an almost inaccesible part of the reserve ancient rock carvings can be found from the Kaskabulak primitive people. The uniqueness of the nature reserve was also recognized by others. The reserve is therefore candidate to be placed on the world heritage list of the UNESCO.

European Glass Lizard (pseudopus apodus)
The most famous animal in the reserve is without doubt the snow leopard but the chances that you will ever spot one here are very low. It should be less difficult to observe the Menzbier's marmot, the Tien Shan bear or the Siberian ibex. The largest bird in the reserve is the golden eagle which can often be found circling above the Aksu river canyon looking for prey. With its 3 meters span realy an amazing view.

The nature reserve is accessible for interested people, including foreign tourist. With permission of the administration of the nature reserve and guided by a skilled guide, it is possible to become acquainted with much of what the reserve has to offer.

Tours in the park must be organized by licensed organizations in order to obtain proper permission to enter the reserve.
