Caves in the Karatau mountain rangeThe region around Jabagly is dominated by two mountain ridges. Southern of the village you can find the Tien Shan mountain range with the Aksu-Djabagly nature reserve; 15 kilometers to the north the Karatau mountain range starts and continues about 500 to the Northwest. In between is the Chokpak pass. The Karatau mountain range contains many caves, and in some of them you can find remnants of ancient people that lived there thousands of years ago. One cave is easily accessible from Jabagly by jeep. Although this cave does not contain any prehistoric drawings, it is an interesting place to visit. In Soviet times, a tunnel of 300 meters has been digged to the central room. If you are not too large you can walk upright to the end of the tunnel. There was even electricity until the fall of the USSR, but nowadays all equipment has been removed and used for private purposes. The cave system consists of several rooms, some only accessible by small people or children. In the main room there is a stalactite that should make your wishes come out when touched. In these days the caves are rarely visited and most of the time people use torches with large flames to to provide light. Unfortunately this has caused the caves to become dirty. The local government has proposed a plan to clean the caves but because of lack of money it is not known if, and when this cleaning will take place. There is no admittance fee to enter the caves, but it is recommend tot visit the caves with an experienced guide.
