Rock carvings in the Aksu-Djabagly nature reserveThe Aksu-Djabagly State Nature Reserve is actually divided in two areas. The main part can be found in the Tien Shan mountain range south of the village of Jabagly. There is however a second small part about 100 kilometers away in the Karatau mountain range. Ancient rock carvings can be found in the mountains near the village Kaskabulak. These rock carvings are believed to be made by artists of the Kaskabulak people who lived here 2500 years ago.
Because this area is part of the nature reserve, admittance fee must be paid and you have to be accompanied by a ranger or guide to enter this site. See for prices the Aksu-Djabagly reserve section. This location is difficult to reach. Snow blocks the track until the middle of June and even if the snow is gone you have to plan two days to reach the site and come back in Jabagly. For those interested in ancient people this is however an interesting place to visit.
